The palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian in Split has been named a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Despite a weathered facade, iliis sprawling imperial residence and fortress is considered the finest intact example of classical defence architecture in Europe. Sibenik, a city and port in northern Dalmatia, not far from the estuary of the Krka river into the Bay of Sibenik, connected by narrow straits with the Sibenik Channel. The city is arranged amphitheatrically around the natural harbour and on the surrounding hill slopes. Riviera is placed in the area of north Dalmatia.
