Album: National Park Brijuni, Region: National Parks
In 1984 Brijuni was proclaimed a national park. Some 680 species of plants grow on the islands, including many exotic subtropical species planted at Tito's request. The islands are still used for official state visits but Croatian president Stipe Mesic spends less time there than his predecessor. Brijuni, are a group of two larger and twelve smaller islets along the West coast of Istria, near Pula, with the total area of only 7 km2. Both archipelago and the surrounding sea are under protection. Croatia have 472 sq km of national park on land and 224 km that compose the Kornati Islands.
