The area of Plitvice Lakes
Album: National Park Plitvice Lakes , Region: National Parks
The area of Plitvice Lakes, declared a National Park in 1949, is a valley situated between high forested mountains in which lies, one bellow another, a string of sixteen beautiful lakes and tarns of crystal blue-green colour. The waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park were formed by mosses that retain calcium carbonate as river water rushes through the karst. Travertine, or tufa, builds up sprouting plants which grow on top of each other to create barriers to the river. Croatia have 472 sq km of national park on land and 224 km that compose the Kornati Islands.
