Pula and Porec were Illyrian hill forts that the Romans chose as highly fortified strongholds because of their well-sheltered bays and strategic positions overlooking the lowlands. The best preserved Roman ruins are in Pula and date from the reign of Augustus (63 BC to AD 14). Porec continually top the annual poll of best holiday resorts in Croatia, as organized by the Croatian National Tourist Board. Most visitors arrive by car, but you can fly in to Pula Airport to where Ryanair have recently commenced flights to. Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea.
