Album: Rovinj, Region: Istria
In 1199, Rovinj signed an important pact with Dubrovnik to protect its maritime trade, but in the 13th century the threat of piracy forced it to turn to Venice for protection. The town was fortified under the Venetians but was still subject to attacks from Genoa and the Uskoks. Rovinj, a picturesque Istrian town is an oasis of beautiful nature and exceptionally agreeable climate. The old town of Rovinj is entirely contained within an egg-shaped peninsula, with the bus station just to the south-east. Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea.
