National Park Brijuni

Brijuni, are a group of two larger and twelve smaller islets along the West coast of Istria, near Pula, with the total area of only 7 km2. Both archipelago and the surrounding sea are under protection. The Brijuni Archipelago is known for its preserved Mediterranean vegetation, which is partly landscape and partly a safari park. 14 islands and islets make up this archipelago, which is also a National Park, and located close to Pula. The group of islands consists of 2 larger ones and 12 smaller ones. The archipelago is noted for its valuable cultural heritage from the Roman and Byzantine times. Due to its extraordinary beauty, the Brioni Islands have been, for over a hundred years now, a favourite tourist destination of world statesmen and aristocracy. Only up until a few years ago, the islands were closed to the general public as they were the summer residence of President Tito and top officials of the former Yugoslavia. Over the years, almost 100 foreign heads of state were received by Tito on the islands. Many film stars were also guests of Tito, including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti, and Gina Lollobrigida. Island Name: Veli Brijun, Mali Brijun, Sveti Marko, Gaz, Okruglja, Supin, Supinić, Galija, Grunj, Vanga, Madona, Vrsar, Jerolim i Kozada
