Istria Sterne - Wells

Istria Sterne - Wells

Istria's wells are a source of countless untold, unknown and almost mystic tales. Many Istrian households had a well in their yard or stable, which was used as a large rainwater reservoir. Wells, cisterns or reservoirs represented a fountain of life and were a symbol of both the poverty and the wealth of Istrian families.

In numerous squares in Istrian towns, they boasted of the skills of outstanding builders. Svetvincenat in central Istria guards one the loveliest and best-preserved public wells in Istria. Built in 1808, the well is today an important monument of architecture.

Istrian wells can be recognized by their characteristic style of construction. Most of these stone constructions were built from the 16th to the 19th century. Their interior walls are covered with a mixture of limestone, ground bricks and flint sand, while a typical stone crown decorates their exterior. These preserved wells are the symbol of an era of which only the eldest of Istrians still speak, like a myth that is passed on from generation to generation.
